The World Blind Union (WBU) expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Dean LermenGonzález on 4 May 2026 in Colombia.
Dean Lermen González was a distinguished social communicator, journalist, university professor, and one of Colombia’s most respected leaders in the movement of blind and partially sighted persons. Throughout his life, he remained deeply committed to the promotion and protection of human rights, accessibility, inclusive education, and equitable access to information for persons with visual disabilities.
A graduate of Universidad Externado de Colombia and holder of a Master’s Degree in Political Studies from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Dean served with distinction in several important public and institutional roles. He was Director General of the National Institute for the Blind of Colombia (INCI) and President of CONALIVI, the National Coordinator of Organizations of Persons with Visual Impairment.
His leadership and influence extended far beyond Colombia. From 2020 to 2024, he served as Secretary General of the Latin American Union of the Blind (ULAC) and was also a valued member of the Executive Committee of the World Blind Union, where he made significant contributions to strengthening the global movement of blind and partially sighted persons.
Throughout his remarkable career, Dean played a pivotal role in advancing public policies and inclusive legislation, while championing initiatives related to audio description, braille literacy, assistive technologies, accessibility, and equal opportunities. His tireless efforts helped promote the autonomy, dignity, participation, and empowerment of blind and partially sighted persons across Latin America and beyond.
At this time of deep grief, the World Blind Union extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, CONALIVI, ULAC, the Colombian movement of persons with visual disabilities, and all those around the world who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
Dean Lermen González leaves behind an enduring legacy of commitment, leadership, solidarity, and service. His life and work will continue to inspire future generations in the ongoing pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and accessible world for all.
