A global campaign to advance braille literacy and inclusive education

More Braille: More Empowerment is a joint global campaign of the World Blind Union (WBU) and the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI). Our goal is simple: ensure that blind and partially sighted people everywhere can learn braille and use it to read, write, study, work, and participate fully in society.

Braille is more than a code. It is access to literacy, independence, and opportunity. Yet millions of blind and partially sighted learners still face barriers – limited access to trained teachers, outdated or unavailable learning materials, and uneven investment in braille production and technology.

This campaign brings together educators, blind-led organisations, families, governments, and private-sector partners to close those gaps.

Why braille matters

Braille supports:
– Literacy and learning, including spelling, grammar, and written expression
– Educational success, from early learning through post-secondary study
– Employment and lifelong skills, including independent note-taking and workplace communication
– Confidence and autonomy, through full access to written information

Digital tools are important, but they do not replace the need for strong literacy foundations. Braille remains essential, especially when it is taught early, taught well, and supported with the right materials and technology.

On World Braille Day, January 4, 2026, we officially launched More Braille: More Empowerment! With launch events in India as well as online, we kicked off the campaign that will guide WBU and ICEVI’s Braille advocacy work over the next two years. What we are working toward

Through More Braille: More Empowerment, WBU and ICEVI are working to:
– Raise awareness of braille as a fundamental pillar of inclusive education
– Strengthen advocacy so countries invest in braille instruction, materials, and technology
– Support quality teaching by sharing practical guidance and resources for educators and families
– Generate evidence on braille access and outcomes to inform policy and funding decisions
– Promote availability of materials and tools, including both paper braille and affordable braille technology

How the campaign is organized

The campaign is guided by a joint Steering Committee, with work advanced through three Focus Area Working Groups:
– Advocacy & Media
– Information Resources
– Research

Together, these groups coordinate global messaging, develop tools and guidance, and build the evidence base needed for sustained change.
